The treatment or sound and b y extension, the use of music in cartoons permits us to approach the understanding or a technique that is used in various film genres. Starting from theories that have been explained previously b)' this author in studies ot the relationships between music and the cinema, this paper describes three cases which exemplify the guiding principals or ambiental sound as used in animation. The raw material is the short films produced in the United States between 1928 and 1958. Music as applied to animation permits us to see three perceptive parameters: verisimilitude, diversion and distancing.
