Abstract

In spring of the year 1930, Josep Maria Planes (1907-1936) took over the management of the weekly graphic news magazine Imatges (“Images”), edited by Antoni López Llausàs for the Llibreria Catalònia at number 7, Catalonia Square. Although the experience was short, from 18 June to 25 November, it reaffirmed the versatility of the Manresa native in the area of reporting and feature-writing, at the head of a generation of young reporters like Irene Polo, Xavier Picanyol, Rosa Maria Arquimbau and the photographer Gabriel Casas. The ban by the authorities on the beauty contest La Reina dels Banys brought into sharp focus the contradictions between a morally conservative society and the cosmopolitan Barcelona which Planes wanted to promote in the magazine.
