Television seeks a space for relocation within the convergent media landscape. In recent years, the multiplication of channels, the consolidation of online platforms, changes in audience habits, the aging of the classical audience and the weak connection with young audience have provoked transformations that have affected television content. This paper studies the evolution of generalist television during the period from 2007 to 2016, when contextual and structural factors converged. These factors have determined the current development of television, forming an oligopoly around the Atresmedia and Mediaset groups. Together, they account for 86.4% of the advertising investment and 57.2% of the total audience in 2016. The results suggest that generalist television has undergone a process of adaptation to a highly competitive and adverse environment, which has forced it to reinforce its brand positioning and differentiation.
