Abstract
Overwhelmed by the current situation, journalism can gain serenity by turning its gaze on those principles that had already helped it to overcome difficult times in the past. In this spirit, we reflect herein on the study of the thinking of the journalist and academic Eric Everth. Everth was dismissed by the Nazis due to the fact that he was a liberal supporter of the Weimar Republic and an advocate of freedom of the press. In The newspaper at the service of the public sphere, he pointed out what the newspaper’s public service role consisted of and constructed a theory of the interests the newspaper should serve. Given all the adversities that afflict newspapers today, Everth’s ideas remind us that their hardships are a blow to democracy. Key words: journalism, public sphere, community, professional ethics, freedom of the press, Zeitungswissenschaft. Downloads
